Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday presented the Union Budget 2026 – her ninth consecutive – inspired by three ‘duty’ responsibilities to accelerate and sustain economic growth. The policy announcements of the Minister have resulted in reduction in prices of many commodities. The government announced targeted relief for cancer patients by waiving basic customs duty on 17 essential cancer drugs and medicines with the aim of reducing treatment costs. It also exempted customs duties on imports for nuclear power projects until 2035. However, income tax payers, who were expecting changes in tax exemption or standard deduction, did not get any relief.
