Made with a budget of Rs 4 lakh, Nartanasala was a commercial success, completing a 100-day run in 19 centers and a 200-day run in two centres. It was also dubbed into Bengali and Oriya languages. Narathanasala won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film and the Filmfare Award for Best Telugu Film. At the 3rd Afro Asian Film Festival held in Jakarta in 1964, Nartanasala received two awards: Best Male Actor (Ranga Rao) and Best Art Director (Sarma). On the centenary of Indian cinema in April 2013, CNN-News18 included Nartanasala in its list of the “100 Greatest Indian Films of All Time”. Story of Nartanshala The plot is as follows: Based on the Virata Parva of the Indian epic Mahabharata, Nartanshala focuses on the paths of the Pandavas in their final year of exile. The Pandavas adopted different identities and lived secretly in the Matsya kingdom of Virata. The Kauravas wanted to reveal the real identity of the Pandavas so that they could repeat another 13-year exile in a cyclic manner. The problems that the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi faced in Matsya due to various factors, especially Virata’s brother-in-law Keechak, form the rest of the story.
